For the past few months, I’ve been writing a series on TYGES’ core values: integrity, respect, accountability, determination, and courage. In continuing the series this month, I will address my favorite of the five values: COURAGE!
TYGES defines courage this way in our organization: “We face our challenges and take measured risks despite uncertain outcomes.”
Courage plays a role in TYGES’ process as we work with both our clients and our candidates. Our clients choose TYGES because their searches are unique and challenging. It takes some hard conversations to find that perfect match between candidate and position. This is because TYGES remains impartial and will not take the side of only the client or only the candidate. Instead, we mediate between the two parties to make sure each has an agreement that makes them whole. This means TYGES will do the hard and courageous work of advocating on behalf of the other party to make sure the best deal is won for both sides.
TYGES chooses courage, but that does not mean courage is easy. Take a look at that definition again.
There are Challenges.
Risks.
Uncertain outcomes.
In order to be courageous then, you must first be uncomfortable. But there are strategies available to help press through that discomfort. Below I share a few strategies I have used in my own life – maybe some will resonate in yours.
Know Yourself
Here’s how it works for me: I know I tend to overthink and quickly see the potential negative outcomes of a situation. When I realize I am losing myself to those thoughts, I step back and remember that I have this tendency. When I remember the context of my thoughts as fitting with my patterns, I find it easier to control my thoughts rather than let them control me.
(Please note, knowing yourself does NOT mean beating yourself up for the way you are. I have just found it to be a tool to help understand where the emotions come from).
Give Yourself Credit
Here’s some good news that you can always fall back on: you’ve gotten this far! Since you’ve made it this far you can trust yourself to have the credentials to keep pressing forward.
Keep a Grounded Perspective
Most situations you find yourself in will not make or break your life. After I graduated college, I remember walking into an interview thinking that that one interview would determine my future success. But that was far from true.
At the end of the day, there will always be another job opportunity. Regardless of the outcome, this one obstacle in front of you might just be a stepping stone along your journey. Your path toward success might look different than you imagined. But that does not mean you will never reach it.
Keep pressing forward in courage as you step one foot closer to your goal!
